In the News: Story On Diwali Feast in Tucson Weekly submitted by Dasarath dasa, by Tucson Weely Posted October 29, 2006 The nights are getting cooler, the days are getting shorter, and people all over America are gearing up for Halloween and Thanksgiving. But in India, they have a different holiday to add some cheer to these darker days: It's called Diwali. "Diwali means 'festival of lights or lamps,'" explains Sandamini, co-owner of the Hare Krishna-run restaurant Govinda's Natural Foods. "(The holiday) is celebrated all over India with great pomp and excitement. ... All the houses are lit up with lights, candles and ghee lamps, along with lots of sweets and fireworks." It seems to be a constant initial response to the death of someone close that you can't believe you will never see them again. It seems impossible you won't come around a corner and there they will be, as they have been for so many years. It's as if it takes awhile after the fact for the space they physically and subtly filled to revert to empty: and then that brings its own ache. We members of the Interfaith League of Devotees at 25 1st Ave. (directly behind 26 2nd Ave.) in New York City have worked hard for at least 12 years building our six-storey 'hole' -- familiar to many as the Sanctuary Restaurant. The Beginning of Kartik by The Sri Gaudiya Vedanta Samiti Posted October 13, 2006 Oct. 7, 2006, is the first day of the Kartika Vraja Mandala Parikrama, and it will continue to Nov. 7. As every year, a beautiful pandal was built in Gopinatha Bhavan in Vrndavana, and Srila Narayana Maharaja gave his first discourse there today. He said that many of our important acaryas have appeared or disappeared in this month, and that many of Sri Krsna's important pastimes occurred in this month. He said that everyone should give up their comforts such as having air conditioning and an attached bathroom during this month, because they have come here to perform austerities. This is the minimum standard that he set for his followers and which all ISKCON devotees accept. This standard is actually based on the traditional Gaudiya Vaisnava minimum standard set by Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Of course, that standard is 100,000 names of Krishna daily, roughly equivalent to 64 rounds of Hare Krishna japa, according to Bhaktivinoda Thakura and other acaryas. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta, echoing Lord Caitanya, considered those who could not adhere to this minimum standard to be fallen. She should not be put outside spring, summer, fall or winter. Not anytime. When raising Tulsi from a baby plant, find a nice warm very sunny area to place her. She must be in the sun everyday, all day until the sun sets. You must water her everyday because she needs water daily. Tulsi will start growing very fast and will spread. As she spreads she will grow manjaries. When the manjaries are dryed out and turning brown, clip them off with a pair of sissors between the two small leaves at the bottom of the manjary. 11.00am - 19.00pm Zürich, Bürkliplatz Two Types of Brahman Realization by Niscala dasi Posted October 4, 2006 We know that realization of God in His Bhagavan feature is the highest realization, as it includes realization of His other features, Paramatma and Brahman. And we are given the logical proof- that as God is everything, He must be form and personality as well; but that since God is all-spiritual, His personality and form must necessarily be spiritual. And in the science of objects in this world, such as the study of electricity, it is the beginning student who knows it as an impersonal energy, but a master who knows the workings of the electrician behind it and how he directs it in certain ways according to his design.
